Blemishes and acne can occur to people of all ages and skin types, and are most commonly treated with over-the-counter acne creams and lotions. Usually, these creams and lotions contain benzoyl peroxide or other harsh chemicals that clear skin but also cause irritation and inflammation. Fortunately, acne breakouts can be cleared using household products which can eliminate acne without damaging the skin.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a non-pore-clogging oil that is highly purgative to the pores on your skin. It can be used twice per day instead of soap to flush out your pores. Soap can be very irritating and can even exacerbate acne breakouts. When your skin is cleansed with castor oil, it not only keeps your skin clear of bacteria and impurities, but also deeply hydrates your skin so that it remains soft and supple. Smooth 1 tsp. of castor oil onto your face, and rub it around using small, circular motions with your fingertips. After a few minutes, place a hot towel over your skin, letting the steam penetrate your pores, releasing them of impurities and excess oil. Once the towel cools down, use it to clean the oil off of your skin.

Baking Soda

Baking soda kills acne-causing bacteria, and can be used as both a facial scrub and a facial toner to treat acne. Because baking soda consists of rounded particulates, it will not scratch your skin when used as a scrub. Scrubs are beneficial in treating acne because they remove dead skin and impurities that can become lodged and trapped inside your pores. To use baking soda as a scrub, mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water, massage the mixture onto the skin for a minute, then rinse it off with water. Repeat twice per week. To use baking soda as a toner, fill an empty spray bottle with water and add 1 tsp. of baking soda into it. Spray your face after cleansing, and let the toner dry naturally on your skin. Repeat twice per day.

Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion is usually used to treat chicken pox blisters or poison ivy rashes, but it can also dry up acne pustules on your skin. Calamine lotion is non-irritating, and can be used multiple times per day to clear acne without causing damage or inflammation on your face. To use calamine lotion on acne breakouts, dip a cotton swab into full-strength calamine lotion, then dab the lotion onto the acne breakouts. Let the calamine lotion dry, and leave it on for at least an hour before washing it off with water.
