Homemade Remedy for Getting Rid of Blackheads
Blackheads form when tiny hair follicles in your skin become clogged with excess oil, dirt, bacteria or dead skin cells. When that plug is exposed to air, it changes color, forming the black spot you see. To get rid of them, you'll need a deep-cleaning mask.
Combine 1 tbsp. sugar, 1 tbsp. baking soda and 2 tbsp. water in a mixing bowl. According to Janice and Lauren Cox, authors of "Ecobeauty: Scrubs, Rubs, Masks, Rinses, and Bath Bombs for You and Your Friends," baking soda removes the dead skin and bacteria that cause blackheads.
Stir the ingredients until they form a paste. Drizzle 1 tbsp. honey into the mixture and stir again. Cox praises honey's natural antibacterial properties, and the National Honey Board agrees. Honey is also a humectant, they say, which helps your skin retain valuable moisture---especially if you've been overdrying it with harsh chemical acne creams that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
Splash your face with lukewarm water. According to Cox, the recipe should be applied to damp skin.
Apply the mask mixture to your face, massaging it in gently.
Let the mixture soak in for a few minutes. You may want to set a kitchen timer for 5 minutes to help you remember.
Rinse the mask off.
Dry your face with a towel. Pat your skin gently---don't scrub or rub with extra force. According to Dr. Howard Murad in "The Cellulite Solution," the simple act of rubbing your skin with a towel strips away the water and lipids it needs to stay healthy. Murad suggests patting dry any time you wash your face or body.
