Homemade Remedy for Acne

Overview

Acne is a skin condition that occurs due to heredity and hormone production. When an overproduction of sebum, or oil, is released in the skin, bacteria and dead skin cells collect in the hair follicles. When hair follicles become filled with debris, they can become infected, causing red pimples on the skin's surface. Severe cases of acne may require a dermatologist's care, but mild to moderate acne can be treated at home, with over-the-counter products and home remedies.

Step 1

Apply aspirin to pimples to reduce redness and dry them out. Crush an aspirin tablet into a powder, then add two drops of water to it and mix thoroughly to make a paste. Apply the paste directly to the pimple for several minutes, then rinse off to dry out the pimple, suggests Reader's Digest.

Step 2

Wash your pillowcase at least once a week with an unscented detergent if you have acne on your face. Sebum can accumulate on your pillowcase after sleeping on it. To avoid transferring the sebum back to your face, wash your pillowcase regularly.

Step 3

Apply eye drops that reduce redness to your blemishes. Squeeze redness-reducing eye drops onto a cotton swab, then touch the cotton swab to your blemish for about one minute. Redness-reducing eye drops constrict the blood vessels on your skin, temporarily reducing redness.

Step 4

Wash makeup off of your face before going to bed, states dermatologist James E. Fulton, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. Makeup contains oils that can clog pores and cause breakouts.

Step 5

Switch your makeup to an oil-free, noncomedogenic alternative. Some makeup contains excess oil, which will clog pores. Oil-free makeup is available at drug and grocery stores.
