Homemade Remedies to Clear Acne

Overview

Acne can be an annoying, unsightly problem, especially for teenagers. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 85 percent of teenagers suffer from acne each year, although acne can occur at any age. Luckily, many mild to moderate case of acne can be cured or alleviated using home remedies. If you have severe acne, you should consult a dermatologist.

Step 1

Make a paste using equal parts of baking soda and warm water. Spread this mixture over your face and wash off using warm to cool water. According to author Julie Gabriel in her book, "The Green Beauty Guide: Your Essential Resource to Organic and Natural Skin Care, Hair Care, Makeup, and Fragrances," baking soda makes a beneficial antibacterial face scrub for treating acne-prone skin.

Step 2

Dab a bit of toothpaste on pimples before going to bed. Be sure to use regular toothpaste and not the tartar-control type, which contains harsher chemicals that can irritate your skin. According to author Joey Green in his book, "Joey Green's Amazing Kitchen Cures 1,150 Ways to Prevent and Cure Common Ailments with Brand-Name Products," toothpaste can help to dry up pimples quickly.

Step 3

Sprinkle some wheat germ over your morning cereal or eat a tablespoon or two mixed with a cup of yogurt. According to author Daniel Matthew Korn in his book, "Why Diet and Exercise Fail," wheat germ has anti-inflammatory properties and is high in vitamin E, two beneficial factors that can help to improve the skin of people suffering from acne.

Step 4

Apply goldenseal extract to acne-prone areas of your skin using a cotton ball. According to author Gabriel, goldenseal is an herb that has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which can help to soothe irritated skin and kill bacteria that causes or exacerbates acne.

Step 5

Mix together two tablespoons of honey, four teaspoons of lemon juice, three teaspoons plain yogurt and one egg white to make a soothing, anti-acne facial mask. According to author Gabriel, the ingredients in this homemade mask may also help to brighten pre-existing acne scars. Leave the mask on your face for ten to fifteen minutes before rinsing off with warm water.

Step 6

Mix together one teaspoon cornstarch and one teaspoon lemon juice. Apply this paste to pimples to help them heal, reduce redness and swelling, according to author Green.
