Having great skin doesn't always have to involve a dermatologist or a spa therapist. Even if you suffer from mild to moderate acne, it is possible to improve your skin at home by paying it just a bit more attention. A common sense skin care regimen can make it possible to improve your skin from the comfort of your own home.

Wash Properly

Many people make the mistake of thinking that scrubbing their skin cleans it better and making it less prone to acne breakouts. This is not the case. As a matter of fact, harsh scrubbing may worsen the problem, as this can irritate the skin and make breakouts worse. Wash gently twice a day with a mild cleanser for best results.

Exfoliate Regularly

The skin is designed to be able to shed old cells as new ones are formed. Under normal circumstances, these cells would drop off and be flushed away, but this isn't always the case. When skin cells are not properly shed they can clog the pores of the skin, causing inflammation.

People with oily skin or those who don't wash properly may have a problem with breakouts due to dead skin cells clogging their pores. Using an exfoliating cleanser or washcloth to cleanse the face and slough off dead skin is a great way to avoid unnecessary breakouts.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is Mother Nature's secret to great skin, as drinking plenty of water helps detoxify and purify, promoting the exfoliation of dead skin cells and promoting clearer skin overall.

Hands Off

Don't touch your face. When you touch do, you transfer troublesome oils and dirt from your hands to your face, and these can cause breakouts. If you must apply makeup or cream to the face, use a sponge to avoid using your hands. Wash your hands immediately before touching your face if you can't avoid hand-to-face contact.

Eat Well

A well-balanced diet is a great way to enhance the health of your skin. Fresh, brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain plenty of vitamins A and D, which directly affect the skin. If you aren't much into fruits and veggies, supplement your diet with a hair, skin and nails vitamin available from your local health foods or supplement store.
