According to the Mayo Clinic, acne is generally caused by three general factors: the overproduction of oil, commonly referred to as sebum buildup; the buildup of bacteria; and irregular shedding and re-growth of skin cells, causing the small hair follicles in the skin to become irritated. Home remedies and folk-cures for pimples and acne are abundant, and some people claim that home remedies can help treat or even cure pimples and acne. None of the ideas provided here have been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for effectiveness, however.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera can have a soothing, cooling effect on areas affected with pimples or acne, according to Alan C. Logan and Valori Treloar, authors of "The Clear Skin Diet." It is also a natural bacteria-fighting plant, and it can help to reduce inflammation. To apply aloe vera, cut the skin from a fresh aloe vera leaf and use the gel inside.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a particularly beneficial herb in the treatment of pimples and acne according to Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies," because it contains menthol, a natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent. To use fresh peppermint on the affected areas, crush two tablespoons of mint leaves in a mortar and pestle or with the back of a knife on a clean cutting board. Rinse the leaves with very cold water and apply to the skin for seven to 10 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and pat dry after application.

Nettle Leaves

Because of nettle's anti-inflammatory properties, it can help to reduce pain associated with severe acne while detoxyfing the body. Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies" recommends that you boil 1 cup of nettle leaves for two to three minutes in 3 cups of water before drinking the mixture, with a bit of honey or lemon if desired. Don't put nettle on the skin, as it can cause irritation when applied directly.

Wheat Grass

Because of wheat grass' cleansing properties, it can be used as a natural treatment for acne and pimples. Wheat grass helps to flush toxins from the body, which can cause acne, according to Alan C. Logan and Valori Treloar, authors of "The Clear Skin Diet." They recommend drinking 4 ounces per day to help acne.

Rose Water and Lime Juice

Rose water and lime juice mixed in equal proportions is a common folk remedy for acne, according to Alan C. Logan and Valori Treloar, authors of "The Clear Skin Diet." Lime juice has astringent properties and rose water can help soothe irritated skin, the authors say. To use rose the rose water and lime juice solution, apply a handful to the skin and let it dry naturally. After 30 minutes, rinse the skin with cool water and pat dry with a clean towel.
