Home Remedy for Curing Blackheads
Open comedones, more commonly known as blackheads, are a form of acne. The pore becomes blocked with a mixture of oils, dead skin cells, dirt and collagen. Rather than sealing over and becoming inflamed, like when a pimple occurs, the clogged pores remain open and the tip of the mixture turns black as it oxidizes in the air.
Home remedies exist which can help cure mild to moderate outbreaks of blackheads.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil comes from an Australian native tree called Melaleuca Alternifolia. It is believed to be able to kill bacteria and cleanse the skin of oils and dirt because of its terpinen-4-ol compound which has antimicrobial qualities. A favorite of the cosmetics industry, tea tree oil can be found in a wide range of products including those for skin care.
Evidence supporting tea tree oil's use for acne comes from a study cited by the University of Maryland. Tea tree oil was tested against benzoyl peroxide, well-known as an effective treatment for all types of acne. The results from the 119-person study showed that tea tree oil, in five percent gel, performed as well as the benzoyl peroxide at clearing up acne --- and even had fewer side effects.
''Readers Digest: 1001 Home Remedies'' recommends using a hot compress on the blackhead area before attempting removal. Simply soak a washcloth in hot water, wring out and apply it to the face until it cools. Repeat this several times over 10 minutes and it should open and soften the pores. Then use a blackhead removal tool, available at most drugstores, to squeeze out the blackheads from the opened pores. Tea tree oil on a cotton pad can then be used to cleanse the face. Rinse with a splash of cool water and pat dry.
Despite the positive results from the study cited by the University of Maryland, there is still little evidence available from reliable sources to confirm tea tree oil is an acne cure, notes MayoClinic.com. More medical research needs to be done on natural remedies in general to help support their claims as effective treatments for conditions like acne and blackheads.
Speak with your doctor before using tea tree oil for blackheads, and stop if it causes skin irritation.
