The four main causes of acne include excess oil, bacteria, clogged pores and inflammation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. To eliminate many of these causes, gently wash your face twice a day and after sweating. Keep your hair clean and prevent it from touching acne-affected skin. Avoid using coarse scrubs, washcloths or puffs when washing your face. These tend to increase the irritation of the skin and worsen acne breakouts. Tea tree oil helps reduce the bacteria responsible for causing acne, but may also dry out the skin.

For some people, certain foods can trigger acne breakouts, according to the ADA. However, no studies have revealed any specific foods that cause acne in all people. If you think food may be responsible for your breakouts, make a list of what you have eaten and track breakouts to discover what foods you ate during the 24 hours prior to any breakout. Look for commonalities from one breakout to the next. If any common foods appear on your lists, avoid them. You may also want to avoid eating excessively greasy foods. These can leave oil on the skin surrounding your mouth, making acne worse in this area.
List the things that irritate your skin and avoid them. Common irritants include some makeups, the sun, certain fabrics and tight clothing, according to the Mayo Clinic. Also check the cosmetics you use. Eliminate any cosmetics that do not contain the words "water-based" or "noncomedogenic" on the label. If a breakout occurs, avoid squeezing, picking or popping your blemishes; this will permit them to heal more quickly and reduce your chances of getting an infection or a scar.
