Many people have acne at some point in their lives, typically in their teenage years and into adulthood. It is not recommended to use scrubbers, astringents, toner, masks and excessive washing, as they can cause further irritation, according to the Mayo Clinic. Gels containing 5 percent tea tree oil can provide a natural alternative to benzoyl-peroxide soaps.
Acne Lotion
Apply over-the-counter acne lotions containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid after daily washings. These active ingredients act as drying agents, reducing the oils in your skin. This treatment is recommended for more severe forms of acne. If you want a natural treatment, products containing calendula provide an alternative to benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, according to DrWeil.com.
Diet
The old wives' tale that chocolate causes acne is considered a myth. In fact, there is no direct study linking any food to acne. In general, however, a healthy diet leads to better overall health, and doctors recommend increasing fruits; vegetables; foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon or flaxseeds; and water to aid in healthy skin. Avoid processed foods, and pay attention to foods that seem to correlate to your acne worsening.
Don't Touch Your Face
If you are constantly touching your face, you can transfer dirt and additional oils from your hands to your face, resulting in acne. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands have been washed recently. Also, keep your hair out of your face. Oils in your hair and hair products can transfer to your face, resulting in skin irritations and acne.
