Blackheads are a form of acne, beginning with excessive production of sebum, which blocks pores instead of flowing to the surface of the skin. Whiteheads are pores that have a plug of sebum and are closed with skin cells, but blackheads are open to the air, so the surface of the sebum plug oxidizes and appears dark. Picking at them and squeezing them can cause infection and scarring.

Cleanse and Exfoliate

Clean your face with a gentle scrub made out of oatmeal. Blend 1 cup of oatmeal in a blender until it becomes a fine powder. Store it in a small jar or bag. Combine 2 tbsp. of the oatmeal with 2 tbsp. of warm water to make a thin paste. Use your fingertips to scrub your face, massaging the oatmeal in circles with your fingertips for at least a minute, paying special attention to the areas with blackheads. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. For a coarser scrub, add 1 or 2 tsp. of salt or sugar.

Steam

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Remove from the heat and add 4 teabags or 4 tsp. of dried herb, such as green tea, chamomile tea, calendula blossoms or lemon balm. Put your face close enough to the steam to feel its warmth, but not close enough to burn your skin. Cover your head and the pot of tea with a towel and steam your face for 5 minutes or until the tea is no longer hot. Steaming your skin opens your pores and softens the blackheads' sebum plug.

Extraction

Combine 1 tbsp. of unflavored gelatin with 2 tbsp. milk and 2 drops of tea tree oil. Heat in the microwave for 10 seconds. Stir and heat again for 10 seconds. Stir until the gelatin is completely melted and the mixture is warm, not hot. Paint the mixture over your blackheads and allow to dry for 15 or 20 minutes. When the mixture is dry, peel the film off slowly, pulling out the plugs in your pores. Pat your skin with aloe vera gel to soothe and prevent inflammation.

Fruit Mask

Mix 1 tsp. of honey or glycerin with 2 tbsp. of chopped soft fruit like papaya, strawberries, banana or applesauce. Spread the soft paste on your face and let it dry for 20 minutes. Honey is a humectant and pulls water out of the air into your skin. Moisturizing your skin will make your pores look somewhat smaller. Fruit is a source of a variety of fruit acids, which dissolve the bonds holding the dead skin cells together so they can be washed away, making your skin look smoother. Rinse thoroughly to remove the mask.

Bleach Pores and Moisturize Your Skin

Use a cotton ball to dab a little lemon juice on your pores, to bleach any remaining sebum plugs so they are less visible. Apply a very thin layer of almond, olive or jojoba oil over your damp face to retain moisture.
