There are quite a few home remedies for blackheads. According to "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies," blackheads are severely blocked pores with solid, discolored centers. Unlike many other types of facial blemishes, it is beneficial to remove the dark center of blackheads so that the irritated pore can heal. Most home remedies for blackheads focus on clearing out the plugged pore.

Cornmeal Scrub

Cornmeal is a natural exfoliant that sloughs out the dark cores of blackheads. The book "Herbal Home Remedies" recommends using cornmeal two to three times a week on both mature and just-barely-formed blackheads to keep your skin clear and fresh. Pour 2 to 3 tbsp. of cornmeal into a bowl and add just enough water to make a paste. Massage the paste into your skin for about five minutes, then rinse off your face and apply a moisturizing lotion.

Iodine Rinse

An iodine rinse relaxes tight pores, loosening their hold on blackhead cores and allowing you to squeeze them out without irritating your skin further. "The World's Best-Kept Beauty Secrets" offers a recipe for this face wash. Combine 1/4 cup of boiling water with three drops of iodine and 1 tsp. of Epsom salt. Allow the rinse to cool until it's just barely warm, then soak a cotton ball with it and dab it onto the blackhead. Gently squeeze the blemish with a tissue until the dark center pops out.

Gelatin Peel

A gelatin peel can be effective for particularly stubborn blackheads, especially if you don't want to squeeze the blemishes. "The World's Best-Kept Beauty Secrets" says that this peel pulls the center from the blackheads, leaving a fairly healthy pore behind. Pour 2 tbsp. of milk into a saucepan over low heat, then dissolve 1 tbsp. of unflavored gelatin in the warming liquid. Apply a layer of the mixture to your blackheads and let it firm up for 30 minutes. Peel it away gently with your fingers.

Egg Mask

Good Housekeeping's website says that egg masks can be effective when dealing with blackheads because sticky egg yolk cleanses pores. Mix 1 egg yolk with 1 tbsp. of crystallized honey and 1 tbsp. of cornmeal. Massage the mask into your face, let it set for 20 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Follow the treatment with a toner and moisturizer, if desired.
