Acne is not unlike the common cold. Millions of people suffer from it annually, and there is no overnight cure. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that 40 to 50 million Americans have some form of acne, whether it be mild or severe. Like the common cold, many people seek ways to treat their acne with home remedies.

Glycerin Soap

The American Academy of Dermatology advises washing acne-prone skin no more than twice daily with a mild soap. Glycerin soaps are all-natural and are very mild. Avoid using scrubbers, washcloths and other irritants. Washing too much can irritate the skin further.

Tea Tree Oil

Like benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil contains antibacterial properties. Apply 5 percent tea tree oil to acne-prone skin after washing and drying.

Zinc Supplements

The Mayo Clinic recommends taking zinc supplements. Zinc is an anti-oxidant that boosts the immune system to fight infections causing acne. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammation. Take supplements with food to avoid upsetting your stomach. Zinc is also found in all-natural topical treatments.

Diet

Dr. Andrew Weil recommends increasing foods high in anti-oxidants such as fruits and vegetables. Anti-oxidants fight free radicals in the skin and improve the skin's overall health. He also recommends increasing foods high in omega-3s, such as wild salmon for their anti-inflammatory properties. Water is essential in maintaining the skin's health, and a minimum of eight eight-ounce glasses should be consumed daily.

Avoid Irritants

Avoid greasy sunscreens, moisturizers and cosmetics. Use only oil-free based products. Hair should be kept away from acne-prone skin to avoid contact with oil from the hair and hair-care products. Sheets and pillowcases should be washed weekly.
