Home Remedies to Help Cure Acne

If you suffer from acne, you undoubtedly know the frustration of spending money on acne products and even prescriptions that do not work. Before you run out to the drugstore to buy that new over-the-counter product or book another dermatologist appointment, try taking a new approach. These homemade acne remedies are not only inexpensive, but they may prove to be the answer to your skin problems.

Oatmeal baths are often recommended for soothing skin during a rash or chickenpox, so it makes sense that it would be useful for treating acne as well. Oatmeal is very dry, so it absorbs extra oil from the skin, making it an ideal treatment if you have oily skin. Create a paste of oatmeal and water and apply to your face in the morning and evening. Allow it to sit for ten to twenty minutes, rinse it off and dab your face dry with a clean towel.

A honey mask could be just what your skin needs. Honey acts as an antimicrobial--it helps get rid of the bacteria causing the acne as well as inhibits further bacteria growth. Additionally, the sticky texture of honey pulls away dirt and dead skin cells, making it an excellent exfoliant as well. Honey contains antioxidants, which help to preserve the youth of your skin, and the wax in the honey leaves skin smooth and glowing. Simply spread a layer of honey over your face and allow it to sit for five to ten minutes before rinsing.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has been used for centuries in wounds and infections. A 1990 study at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia, compared 5 percent tea tree oil with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide, a common ingredient in acne products. The study showed that both products were equally effective at reducing acne, with the tea tree oil producing slightly slower results, but without the side effects of benzoyl peroxide. Tea tree oil is available in small bottles in the supplement section at most pharmacies. Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount directly to acne blemishes.

Lemon Juice

The citric acid can do wonders for acne prone skin. It helps by sloughing off dead skin cells and promoting skin elasticity. Lemon juice also helps flush out clogged pores. To apply, simply put a small amount of lemon juice in a dish, soak some up with a cotton ball and apply to the face. If undiluted, lemon juice is too strong or burns, so remember to dilute it with water. Leave it on overnight, rinse in the morning and reapply.
