Getting rid of acne and blackheads can seem like a never-ending battle. Many people prefer to stay away from commercial acne-fighting products and turn to acne home remedies instead. While there is no body of comprehensive scientific studies to prove the effectiveness of home acne cures, every person's body responds differently. As with many folk remedies, people do report great success when using acne treatments handed down by word of mouth.

Lemon Juice

Fresh lemons are loaded with potassium and vitamin C . Both of these things are proven to have health benefits. It is easier to get juice out of fresh lemons if you roll them between your palms for five to 10 seconds before cutting them in half.

According to Randall Neustaedter, OMD, at CureGuides.com, you should squeeze the juice of one lemon into a small bowl and dip a clean cotton ball into it. Use this as a natural astringent. Leave it on for 10 minutes if you can, but rinse it off sooner if the stinging becomes too intense.

Garlic

Many adherents of folk remedies praise garlic’s antibiotic strength as a good reason to crush it up raw and apply it to your face. According to the experts at Garlic-Central.com, “…although some people seem to think it works, others have reported nothing other than skin burning and reddening.” They suggest that you eat a diet high in raw garlic on the theory that since it is known as a blood-cleanser, it can help you flush out toxins. There is no scientific evidence that this will work, but it should do you no harm.

Ice

The anti-inflammatory properties of ice are well-documented. According to OST Cosmetics Skin Care consultant Oksana Strelnikova, “Ice cubes are best to be used one to two times a day, but without exceeding contact time with skin. On average, the procedure should take no more than five seconds.”

While there is no medical proof that ice can help cure acne, it tightens and refreshes the skin and reduces redness and swelling.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil comes from the Australian tree melaleuca alternifolia and is prized for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. The folks at AcneMythsEtc.com suggest that pure tea tree oil, when applied with a clean cotton swab, can dry up acne and blackheads. Make sure that the tea tree oil you purchase is pure, because additives will dilute its effectiveness.

Toothpaste

The urban myth that toothpaste will dry up acne has been around since at least the time of bobby socks and ducktails. According to Dr. Audrey Kunin, associate clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, toothpaste does have some drying properties and will absorb oil. She goes on to say that bleaching toothpastes contain hydrogen peroxide, which can irritate the skin, so use it only for occasional emergency spot treatments.

Proper Facial Hygiene

The best remedy for acne and blackheads is prevention. MayoClinic.com suggests eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Use mild cleansers instead of harsh exfoliants, and keep your hair away from your face. Many dermatologists suggest that you avoid touching your face with your hands as well.
