Dry skin is one of the most common complaints dermatologists hear about, especially during the winter months. In fact, the "National Health Interview" in 2007 reported that 81 million Americans suffered from dry, itchy, red skin. Different remedies are possible to help you treat the problem, including over-the-counter (OTC) preparations, such as Aquaphor or Eucerin cream, but relief may really be as close as your kitchen and bath. If these remedies do not relieve your dry, red skin, seek medical advice.

Wash Carefully

Dry skin is hurting skin so you do not make things worse by burning or rubbing the sensitive area. Wash your face with warm--not hot--water; don't use soap. Dry the skin thoroughly but gently by patting the area with a towel. Rubbing dry, red skin with a towel will only cause additional irritation.

Hydrate

Dry skin is caused by a lack of water in the skin. Begin by hydrating from the inside out by drinking lots of water and using a humidifier in your home to take care of the outside skin, suggests the National Library of Medicine. Apply any moisturizing concoctions immediately after you have washed your face to lock in the moisture.

Dry Skin Masque

Treat your face to a daily dose of aloe vera gel. The highly moisturizing masque should be applied to clean, damp skin for about 15 minutes and then rinsed with warm water for maximum benefit. You could also try a daily masque containing one egg, 1 tsp. honey and a few drops each of rosewater and olive oil to help soothe dry, itchy skin, suggests an article on the Holistic Online website. The honey works to reduce inflammation while the egg provides both protein and moisture. The olive oil helps keep skin supple. Leave on for about 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Steam Clean

Hydrate your face with a weekly steam treatment. Put a few drops of lavender, patchouli or bergamot essential oil into a bowl, and add about 2 cups of boiling water, suggests an article at the Pioneer Thinking website. Make a tent over the bowl and your head. Allow the steam to penetrate and hydrate pores. After five minutes, rinse your face with cool water.

Moisturize

A mixture of olive oil and aloe vera gel is a natural and homemade method for moisturizing all over, including the face. Reports at the Skin Care Resource Center website say the mixture, when applied lightly to the face, is not greasy and should be used twice a day. Mix 1 tbsp. good quality extra virgin olive oil with the gel from a large leaf of an aloe vera plant (or add 1 tsp. of commercial aloe vera gel), and apply to the face. Keep unused portions refrigerated for less than three days.
