Pimples and dandruff have more in common than you might think, according to the Mayo Clinic. Overactive sebaceous glands are factors in both conditions, so they can be treated similarly. Both dandruff and pimple outbreaks increase during puberty and usually diminish as a person ages. Medications can help with both conditions, but some remedies, as close to hand as your pantry and refrigerator,can help slough off dead skin and clean out pores and hair follicles.

Wash Often and Well

Dermatologists who treat both pimples and dandruff emphasize that clean skin is the most important treatment. Overactive oil glands can be kept in check by daily scalp and face washing with mild shampoos and soaps. An oily scalp, in particular, can exacerbate pimples, because the oil can transfer to the face and back, causing pore blockage, blackheads and pimples. While most hair gets clean with just one lathering and rinse, people with dandruff might need to lather, rinse, repeat to get rid of all the scalp scales.

Olive Oil

It may sound counter-intuitive, but using oil to fight oil actually works. Extra virgin olive oil binds with the dead skin and debris in the pores and around hair follicles, then rinses them away when you wash off the olive oil. Massage olive oil firmly into the scalp and leave on about 10 minutes before washing your hair as usual. For pimples, make a mask with about 3 tsp. olive oil and 1 tsp. lime or lemon juice, then massage the mixture into the skin. Leave on for 30 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water. An article at Free Makeup Tips suggests lime or lemon juice is a great follow-up to an olive oil scalp treatment. Once you've washed the olive oil from your hair, do a final rinse with a mixture of 1 cup hot water mixed with 2 tbsp. lime or lemon juice.

Improve Your Diet

Oily skin, pimples and dandruff can all be made worse by a diet high in junk food. The Mayo Clinic suggests consuming more zinc, omega-3 fatty acid and B-complex vitamins to help clear skin and scalp. Include fish, especially salmon, for the omega-3, whole grains for the B-complex and an occasional square of dark chocolate for the zinc.
