If you've noticed a red, itchy rash on your skin, see a doctor to determine the cause of the rash. It may be due to chickenpox, hives, psoriasis, shingles, Lyme disease or a multitude of other itchy skin conditions. If it's OK with your doctor, use at-home remedies to help soothe uncomfortable, itchy skin. Home remedies will make resisting the urge to scratch an easier task.

Oatmeal Bath

Take a bath in colloidal oatmeal to help reduce itchy skin due to a rash, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Colloidal oatmeal is available at drugstores and grocery stores and is ground into a fine powder so that it will not clog plumbing or drains. If you don't have colloidal oatmeal, grind regular store-bought oats in a clean coffee grinder. Alternatively, you can use a strainer to remove the oats from the bathtub before draining the water. Pour about one cup of oatmeal into a lukewarm bath, then soak in the tub until itching is relieved.

Cold, Wet Dressings

Apply a cold, wet compress to the skin to help reduce itchiness. Wet a washcloth, a strip of gauze or other fabric with very cold water, then apply it to the skin. The cold water will reduce the sensation of itching. Additionally, cold, wet dressings are particularly helpful at night because they will prevent you from scratching the rash in your sleep. If the dressing gets warm, wring out the fabric and apply more cold water as needed.

Baking Soda Paste

If you can't spend the day covered in wet dressings or soaking in the tub, use baking soda as a spot treatment, recommends Patricia Farris Walters, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda with a few drops of water to make a thick paste. Apply the baking soda directly to the skin and allow it to dry to soothe itching and prevent the urge to scratch.
