Home Remedies for Healing Pimples & Redness Quickly
Quickly treating the occasional pimple, even if it's red and inflamed, requires very little in the way of supplies. Home remedies for pimples abound in natural medicine manuals, although their effectiveness hasn't been scientifically proven. If you have acne, consult a medical professional. Homemade treatments are not a substitute for over-the-counter and prescription medications in most cases.
Jude C. Todd, author of the book "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies," prescribes an onion tincture as a quick fix for pimples and redness. Onions have natural antibiotic properties that can zap bacteria and dry up blemishes. To make an onion tincture, pour 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion into a jar and stir in 1 cup olive oil. Seal, and allow the mixture to steep in a cool, dark spot for two weeks. Strain the tincture through cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve and store it in the medicine cabinet for up to three months, keeping it on hand for quick treatment. Dab the tincture on pimples as soon as you spot them. Let the tincture soak into the blemish for 15 minutes before wiping it away.
Onion tinctures are not approved by most medical professionals as a treatment for pimples, particularly painful acne.
Tea Tree Oil
The Reader's Digest's "1,801 Home Remedies" says that tea tree oil has natural antibiotic properties that can treat a variety of skin conditions, including pimples. To use tea tree oil as a quick treatment for pimples, soak a cotton swab in the oil and dab it on the blemish. Repeat three times daily to shrink pimples.
Though many natural medicine practitioners believe tea tree oil can help acne, mainstream doctors generally don't share that belief.
"1,801 Home Remedies" offers a remedy for pimples that calls for honey. Mix 1 tsp. pure honey with 1 tsp. ground nutmeg. Apply to your pimple. Leave on the blemish for 20 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.
"1,801 Home Remedies" says there is no medical proof that a honey-based remedy will heal pimples, and honey can be dangerous for anyone with an allergy to pollen.
Vinegar, as well as fresh-squeezed lemon juice, is very acidic. "1,801 Home Remedies" says that this acid can flush out the pores and shrink pimples quickly. Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice and dab it on the pimple. Repeat two to three times a day. It may sting a bit at first, especially if the pimple is irritated.
Acidic solutions such as vinegar do have some natural cleansing abilities, but they aren't mainstream blemish fighters and may even irritate if you have sensitive skin.
