Home Remedies for Getting Rid of Leg Acne

According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common treatments for acne include: over-the-counter topical treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, salicylic acid or lactic acid; prescription-strength topical treatments available only from a doctor or dermatologist; antibiotics; and Isotretinoin, a powerful treatment more commonly known by its brand name, Accutane. However, there are some home treatments that can help you clear up acne. While proponents of these treatments claim that they work, these claims have not been evaluated by the FDA, so consult your doctor or dermatologist before trying one.

Almond Oil and Lemon Juice

According to Julie Gabriel, author of "The Green Beauty Guide: Your Essential Resource to Organic and Natural Skin Care, Hair Care, Makeup and Fragrances," a mixture of all-natural almond oil and fresh-squeezed lemon juice can help clear up acne on the body by killing bacteria and adding much-needed essential moisture to the area. To use almond oil and lemon juice on the body, mix four tablespoons all-natural almond oil with one tablespoon lemon juice in a small bowl or container and stir to combine. Massage a small amount of the mixture onto the affected area and leave it on for approximately one hour before rinsing the skin with cool water and washing with a gentle cleanser. Apply your regular moisturizer, if you use one, after washing. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as it does not agitate your acne.

Mint and Strawberry Leaves

Author of "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies," Vasant Lad recommends a mixture of mint and strawberry leaves to soothe acne and help get rid of blemishes on the skin. To use fresh mint and strawberry leaves, combine two tablespoons chopped fresh mint and two tablespoons chopped strawberry leaves with two tablespoons water in a small bowl. Wet your face with cool water and gently scrub the skin with the fresh mint and strawberry leaves. Rinse your skin with cool water and pat dry. Apply your regular moisturizer, but there is no need to wash the skin with soap. You can repeat this treatment up to three times per day as long as no irritation occurs.

Witch Hazel and Fennel Essential Oil

"The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy" author Ann Worwood suggests suing of a mixture of witch hazel and fennel essential oil on the skin as a deep cleanser for acne. To use witch hazel and fennel essential oil for acne, mix 10 parts witch hazel with one part fennel essential oil in a small bottle or container and shake or stir. Massage a small amount of the mixture onto the affected area and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing the skin with cool water and washing with a gentle soap. This treatment can be used once per day as long as it does not irritate your skin. Note that you should never use a mixture stronger than 10 parts witch hazel to one part fennel essential oil, because a mixture too high in essential oils can irritate the skin.
