Home Remedies for Facial Acne

Homemade facial masks are an inexpensive method for treating blemishes. Simple ingredients that you already have in your refrigerator or pantry can be used to create these effective home remedies. Also, these remedies are more mild than the creams and lotions typically available at drugstores for treating acne. If you have acne-prone skin, give one of these facial masks a try.

Egg Whites

An egg white mask will unclog your pores, tighten the skin and reduce the redness associated with acne. The mask acts as an astringent and a mild anti-inflammatory, which makes it effective at treating acne and calming the skin. To create an egg white mask, simply crack an egg and separate the egg white from the yolk of the egg. Smooth the egg white over your face and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes. The mask will dry and become very tight, and then it's ready to be rinsed off with lukewarm water. Repeat three to five times a week or as desired for treating your acne breakouts.

Honey

Honey's sticky texture literally pulls dirt out of the pores, making it an effective facial mask for treating acne. Additionally, honey also acts as a powerful antimicrobial and kills bacteria, which is a leading cause of acne. Organic or unprocessed honey will be closer to its natural state and has more of the antimicrobial properties preserved, so look for organic honey at your local health food or natural foods store. To make a honey mask, simply spread a layer of honey over your face. Wrap a towel around your shoulders to protect your clothing as the honey will begin to drip as body heat causes it to melt. Rinse it off after 10 or 15 minutes and repeat once daily or as desired.

Oatmeal

For acne-prone skin that is oily, oatmeal can be turned into an effective remedy. The dry and absorbent texture of oatmeal makes it highly effectively at soaking up oil like a sponge. Mix oatmeal and warm water into a thick paste as though you were making it for breakfast. Spread this thick paste over your face and let it sit for up to 20 minutes. As the oatmeal sits, it will dry and harden. Rinse the oatmeal mask off with lukewarm water. If this remedy proves to be a bit too drying, follow up with a noncomedogenic moisturizer.
