Enlarged pores---clogged openings in skin that can get bigger when oil production increases---are unsightly and often can be avoided by keeping skin clean. Those predisposed to getting enlarged pores, however, can treat skin with a variety of do-it-yourself tinctures that are as effective as (and less expensive than) over-the-counter products. Just remember to rinse skin with cold or cool water after applying the remedies because this helps shrink---rather then further enlarge---pores.

Salt and Buttermilk

Mix a paste that's equal parts buttermilk and iodized table salt. Rub onto enlarged pores, using a circular motion. Allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Repeat three or four times weekly.

Egg Membrane

The membrane of an egg---the part that clings to the inner shell---shrinks pores and calms problem skin. To find it, break a large egg, reserving its contents for later use. Carefully peel the membrane from the inside of the egg, and apply it to the area in question. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes or until it's dry and has adhered to skin. Peel the membrane from your skin and wash your face thoroughly with cool water.

Lemon Juice and Cucumber

Grate half of a peeled, seeded cucumber. Blend it with a squirt of lemon juice, mashing the ingredients until they form a paste. Add about a teaspoon of rosewater and stir to combine. Keep refrigerated until ready to use. Apply with a cotton ball, and allow to dry for 20 minutes. Rinse face thoroughly with cold water.

Tomato Juice

On its own, tomato juice can help reduce the size of large pores. When combined with a bit of calamine powder or sandalwood powder, however, the mixture also can help tone the skin. Apply it directly to the skin on a daily basis. Allow it to dry for 20 minutes. Then, rinse skin with cool water.

Almond Meal

Almond meal, when combined with equal parts water, does an excellent job of shrinking pores. Apply the paste to the skin, and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Afterward, rinse skin completely with cold water.
