Dry skin is annoying, but dry, cracked skin can put you at risk for infection, since damaged skin can't provide a protective barrier against germs and bacteria. Red, itchy, dry skin on your hands is officially called hand contact dermatitis, and a number of home remedies for dry, cracked hands can repair your skin.

Excessive hand washing can lead to dry skin, so if you need to wash your hands frequently in your job or everyday life, protect your skin by always using warm, rather than hot, water and mild soap. If the cracking is severe, use a non-soap cleanser; a number of companies, including Aveeno, Cetaphil and Neutrogena, make non-soap cleansers. Don't dry your hands completely. Instead, pat them mostly dry, using a towel. If you can, clean your fingers rather than your whole hand, since the delicate skin on the backs of your hands is prone to damage.

After washing your hands or after your bath, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly over your hands to seal in the moisture and protect cracked skin. If you're getting ready for bed, slip a pair of cotton gloves over your moisturized hands for extra hydrating power. Keep in mind that if you work in a profession, such as the medical field, where you need to wear latex gloves, petroleum-based moisturizers may interfere with the effectiveness of your latex gloves.

Add olive oil to your bath water, or soak your hands in a mixture of olive oil and water to help heal dry, cracked skin. According to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, olive oil is a good way to soothe dry, damaged skin.

One of the best ways to keep your skin hydrated is to keep yourself hydrated, so drink plenty of water---six to eight glasses---per day.
