If your skin is itchy and burning, you may have a rash, a sunburn, an insect bite, an allergic reaction or dry skin, says the Mayo Clinic. Get burning and itchy skin examined by a doctor to determine the cause of your particular condition. If your doctor allows it, you can use home remedies to treat the itching and pain associated with your rash.

Cold Compress

Use a cold compress to help draw heat out of an irritated rash and soothe itchiness, says dermatologist Diane L. Kallgren, M.D. Wet a piece of gauze, a towel or a washcloth in cold water, then wring it out and place it on the itchy rash. Leave the compress on the area as long as necessary to reduce burning and itching. If the compress gets warm, rinse the towel or gauze in cold water, wring it out again and place it over the afflicted area. Placing a cold compress over the itching area will act as a cover for your skin to prevent you from scratching.

Oatmeal Bath

Oatmeal has soothing properties and will help soothe a burning, itchy rash, says the Mayo Clinic. Pour a handful of colloidal oatmeal in the bathtub, then fill the tub with cool or lukewarm water. Soak in the tub for 15 to 20 minutes, until the itching and burning has subsided. Colloidal oatmeal, which is designed specifically for use in the bathtub, is ground into a fine powder, so it will not clog the drainpipe. You can purchase colloidal oatmeal over the counter at the drugstore.

Loose Clothing

While suffering with itchy, burning skin, wear clothing that is as loose as possible to prevent further agitation, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Clothing that is made of synthetic fibers, like polyester, may be more irritating to skin than natural fibers, like 100 percent cotton. Wash clothing in unscented, mild detergents. If possible, find a clothing detergent that is made specifically for sensitive skin. Harsh detergents with strong fragrances may make the skin even more uncomfortable.
