While facial acne receives more attention that body acne, acne that occurs on the chest, neck, back, shoulders, buttocks or other areas can be just as embarrassing and as likely to result in scarring if left untreated. Over-the-counter medications and prescription treatments are available to treat severe cases of body acne and prevent these complications -- but most cases of body acne are treatable with proper skincare and home remedies.

Daily Cleansing and Skincare

Proper cleansing and skincare is essential to prevent and treat body acne. Wash your body twice each day with warm water and a mild soap designed for use on sensitive or acne-prone skin. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that washing more often or scrubbing your skin vigorously will not get rid of your body acne -- being rough with your skin will increase irritation and redness and stimulate additional oil production, all of which can make acne worse.

Because an accumulation of dead skin cells can contribute to clogged pores and blackheads, exfoliating once or twice each week using a fine-grained product or soft loofah sponge can help decrease body acne. Exfoliate less frequently if you develop skin irritation or notice an increase in the number or severity of your breakouts. The Nemours Foundation also recommends keeping your hands off acne-prone areas and resisting the urge to pick or pop pimples.

Lifestyle Changes

Tight-fitting clothing and synthetic materials trap heat, dirt and sweat against your skin and contribute to acne breakouts. Wear loose-fitting clothing made of natural fibers such as cotton, and wash your clothes every time you wear them. If your clothes become soiled or sweaty, promptly change into something else. These rules also apply to bed linens -- sleeping on dirty shirts and using dirty towels can contribute to acne breakouts.

Keeping your hair clean is also beneficial at controlling body acne, especially if your breakouts tend to occur on your shoulders, neck, back or chest -- and wearing sunscreen and skincare products labeled as non-comedogenic can help prevent clogged pores and minimize body acne.

Supplements and Other Home Remedies

Tea tree oil may effectively treat mild to moderate cases of body acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. Apply the oil directly to acne lesions or add 5 percent tea tree oil to your body soap. Supplementing with zinc, brewer's yeast or guggul may also be beneficial. Acne Talks recommends soaking a cotton ball with 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water and rubbing it over your body acne several times each day. Vinegar helps regulate your skin's pH to make it less hospitable to the bacteria associated with acne breakouts, and it removes excess oil without over-drying your skin.
