Acne breakouts occur to most people at some time in their lives, but most commonly appear during puberty, menstruation and pregnancy, when hormone levels are high. While there are many over-the-counter acne products touted to clear the skin, they are often chemically based and can cause irritation and inflammation of the skin. Acne can be cleared effectively by using a few natural home remedies.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, which is both antibacterial and antimicrobial, is typically extracted from the Australian Tea Tree plant and bottled in its pure form. Pure tea tree oil can irritate the skin, so it must be diluted into a 5 percent solution before application by combining 8 oz. of water with 5 drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil works to clear acne by killing off the bacteria and microbes that cause acne, and, according to the Department of Dermatology of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, can be just as effective as benzoyl peroxide cream in clearing the skin. This makes tea tree oil an alternative acne treatment for people who are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide creams. Tea tree oil can be used on the skin up to three times per day.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an alkaline substance that can be combined with water and massaged onto the skin to remove dead skin cells and bacteria. Removing dead skin cells will help keep the pores from becoming clogged with impurities, and the baking soda, which is composed of smooth particles, will exfoliate the skin without irritating or scratching it. To create a baking soda exfoliant, combine 1 tbsp. baking soda with 1 tsp. water, then massage it onto wet skin for two to three minutes. A baking soda scrub can be used on the face once per day.

Calamine Lotion

Calamine lotion is usually applied to chicken pox blisters or a poison ivy rash to relieve itching and dry up pustules. Many people do not realize that calamine lotion is also effective in drying up and clearing acne breakouts. Because calamine lotion is a natural substance that soothes and calms the skin, it can be used throughout the day without irritating the skin. The skin should be coated in a thin layer of calamine lotion and allowed to dry, then rinsed off after one or more hours.
