Acne affects between 40 million and 50 million Americans, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Do to the high cost of treating acne with over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs, many people search for alternative treatments. In their search for treatments, many have discovered household items that help provide them with effective home remedies for acne pimples.

Oatmeal

Using an apple, some oatmeal and some honey, you can make an effective home remedy for acne, advises Jenny Hwozdek, who practices homeopathic medicine at Nittany Mountain Homeopathy in Lamont, PA. Start by cooking and pureeing an apple. Mix 1 tsp. of honey with your apple puree. In a separate bowl, mix 1/8 cup of warm water with 1/2 cup of oatmeal. Combine the apple mixture with the oatmeal to form a mask. If the mask appears too thin, add a little more oatmeal. Apply the mask using your fingertips. Allow it to sit on your face for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water. You should find that the mask helps to remove dirt and excess oil from your skin, reduces redness and inflammation, moisturizes your skin and helps eliminate acne by killing the bacteria responsible for acne.

Cucumbers And Tomatoes

You can help remove excess oil from your skin using a cucumber and tomato mask, advises Dr. William Jaremko, a dermatologist from Olean, NY. The antioxidants in the tomatoes will also aid in the healing process. Make the mask by blending 1/4 cup of tomatoes with 1/4 cup of cucumbers. Using a blender makes the process easier. The mask will be rather thin. You can thicken the mask using 1 tbsp. of baking soda, if you wish. Apply the mask to acne affected skin and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse the mask off using warm water. If you choose to use a chilled cucumber and tomato, the cooling effect will also help reduce the inflammation produced by your acne.

Turmeric

Blending turmeric, a cooking spice, with coconut or sesame oil to make a mask will also help reduce your acne, according to Acne Resource Center Online. Simply mix about 1/4 cup of turmeric with 1 tbs. of coconut or sesame oil to create a creamy paste. You can warm this paste or simply use it at room temperature. You should apply the paste to your face using your fingertips. Do this about 20 minutes before going to bed, so it can dry and does not get all over your pillow. Sleep with the mask on until morning. You should notice a difference in the size of your acne blemishes by morning. The turmeric has antiseptic properties. These properties help to dry out your acne, while stopping the formation of new acne blemishes and without drying out your healthy skin.
