Acne nodules are one of the most severe forms of acne. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, they are caused by a pore clogged with oil and dead skin cells, resulting in a bacterial infection and inflammation deep within the pore. Acne nodules are one of the most likely forms of acne to leave a permanent scar. The Mayo Clinic and Acne Home warns that if nodules don't show sign of improvement, seek medical treatment.

Wash Your Skin

Do not wash the acne-prone skin more than twice per day. Overwashing can irritate the acne further, as can scrubbers, washcloths, astringents and rubbing the skin dry versus patting with a clean towel. When washing, use a mild glycerin soap. Soaps considered harsh or that leave a residue can cause further damage and result in more acne.

Tea Tree Oil

According to the Mayo Clinic, products containing 5 percent tea tree oil have proven to be just as effective as products with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide, a common acne-fighting medicine. Tea tree oil contains natural antibacterial properties to help clear the infection. Apply tea tree oil after washing the skin.

Water

Drink the minimum eight, 8-oz. glasses of filtered water each day to help flush toxins from the skin as the nodule begins to heal. Water is essential in maintaining the skin's overall health, and keeping it hydrated helps prevent excess skin cells from sloughing off into the pores to result in more acne.

Zinc Supplements

The Mayo Clinic advises taking zinc supplements to help build your immune system. Inflammation is a big issue with nodular acne, and zinc contains anti-inflammatory properties. Zinc is a natural antioxidant, so it also helps in the fight against free radicals.

Don't Pick; Don't Touch

One of the worst things you can do to nodular acne is pick at it. Nodular acne can be painful, but picking at it only worsens the infection. It's also most likely going to result in a deep, individual scar. If the infection isn't treated properly, it can also become chronic, reappearing over and over. The oils and dirt also transfer from your hands to your acne-prone skin, irritating the skin further and providing more materials to clog pores.
