The American Academy of Dermatology states that between 40 and 50 million Americans will be affected by acne within a single year, and regardless of what you were told as a teen, acne can persist well into adulthood. Acne is the result of four components: excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. The search for home remedies for acne free skin has been ongoing, but luckily there have been some tried and true remedies created and tested.

Diet, Sleep & Exercise

According to The Acne Support Team, a proper diet, sleep and exercise are half the battle when it comes to acne. Although no scientific studies have proven food causes acne, there have been studies on impacts to the skin of healthy diets. Dr. Weil recommends increasing fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants to boost the immune system and the skin's ability to heal, and he recommends increasing foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as wild salmon, for anti-inflammatory effects. Stress is known to cause acne breakouts, and a lack of sleep causes stress on the body while exercising is the best way to get rid of stress.

Oatmeal Masks

Oatmeal masks are great for absorbing the excess oils in the skin and leaving the skin feeling soft and moisturized. Cook the oatmeal per the directions, and let it cool a bit to a lukewarm temperature. Apply it to your face for 15 minutes. The Acne Support Team also suggests massaging it a bit for a gentle scrub. Finish your rinse with cold water to close the pores after they have been under the warm mask.

Honey & Apples

Fruit and honey are found in many of the home remedies not only for acne but also for improving skin's health overall. Fruits are loaded with antioxidants that help the skin fight free radicals and provide nutrients needed to heal and renew itself. For this mixture, grate some fresh apple and add honey to create a thick paste. Apply to the acne prone skin and leave it to dry for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water to get all the honey off, followed by a cool rinse. This remedy can be done two to three times per week.

Vitamins

There are several vitamins that have been proven to cause acne when the body is suffering a deficiency from them including: vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6 and zinc. Vitamins A, C, E and zinc are powerful antioxidants all required to boost the immune system and the skin's overall health, and the Mayo Clinic recommends taking zinc supplements as a home remedy for acne.
