No one wants to sit idly by and let acne invade their face, their body and their self-esteem. However, store-bought acne medications can cause peeling, irritation and redness. While serious, inflammatory acne requires medical attention, it's possible to cure mild, noninflammatory acne the natural way with home remedies that include diet control, herbal preparations, and smoothing, homemade masks.

Elimination Diet

The skin is used for systemic elimination of toxins, chemicals and metabolic wastes. When you eat an unhealthy diet, the process of eliminating toxins through the skin can cause breakouts. See if certain foods worsen your skin condition by trying an elimination diet. First, eliminate soda and processed sugar for two weeks. Next, cut out dairy products and constrain the amount of red meat in your diet. Drink lots of water to assist in flushing toxins out of your system. Concentrate on eating foods high in antioxidants, such as raspberries, blueberries and gogi berries, which stabilize skin-damaging free radicals. You should notice an improvement in mild forms of acne in four to six weeks.

Oatmeal Mask

Oatmeal is a gentle exfoliant and an effective oil absorber. Take advantage of its soothing, skin-brightening benefits by making an oatmeal face mask. Natural-HomeRemedies.org recommends pulverizing half a cup of uncooked whole oats and making a paste by slowly adding water. Apply the paste to your face and let it dry completely before rinsing the mask off with lukewarm water.

Nettle Tea

Common nettle, a leafy, flowering herb native to Europe and North America, improves blood circulation and has anti-inflammatory properties. These characteristics are helpful in shortening the lifespan of blemishes and lessening puffy redness. Nettle tea can be consumed two to three times a day; nettle juice can be applied topically to soothe inflamed areas in doses of three to four drops.

Strawberry Mask

Strawberries are naturally rich in salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid used in many over-the-counter acne medications. Salicylic acid sloughs off dead skin cells and encourages skin regeneration to heal acne and hyperpigmentation problems. Mash strawberries together with half a cup of yogurt to make the mask. Apply and rinse the mask off after 10 to 15 minutes. If you are prone to oily skin, make a toner instead by mashing strawberries together with white vinegar. Wipe on acne-prone areas and rinse after five to 10 minutes.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice contains high amounts of citric acid and vitamin C. Applied topically, it exfoliates the skin, dries up pimples and blemishes, and delivers vitamins to the skin's surface for a healthy glow. Cut a lemon in half and rub one of the halves on problem areas to take advantage of the benefits of lemon juice. Application may sting and cause slight redness, in which case mix the juice with water.
