Home Remedies for Acne, Boils and White Heads

Cystic acne, also referred to as boils, occurs when excess oil secretions clog skin pores, causing infection. Boils are characterized by tender, red bumps which become filled with pus. Whiteheads may also be pus-filled, but usually do not become infected or cause discomfort. If caught early, most simple whiteheads and boils can be treated at home with natural methods.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal has been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory agent and natural astringent to clear up complexions, particularly red, inflamed boils, according to Dr. James Fulton, a dermatologist in Newport Beach, California, as cited in the book "Home Remedies: What Works." Additionally, as per GrannyMed.com, oatmeal absorbs oil and acts as an exfoliating agent.

Prepare one serving of plain oatmeal according to the instructions on the package. Spread the cooled oatmeal all over your face. Cover it with a clean washcloth, moistened with warm water. Relax and allow it to work for 15 minutes before washing it off with cold water. Repeat once a day for two weeks.

Onion and Garlic

Garlic and onions are two of the most effective home remedies for the treatment of boils, according to Home-Remedies-For-You.com. Combine equal parts of the juices of these vegetables in a small container. Warm it in the microwave for 10 seconds. Soak a cotton ball in the juice and apply it directly on the boil. Allow it to dry for 10 minutes, then wash off with warm water.

The juice of garlic and onions softens the skin surrounding the boil, allowing the boil to ripen so that the pus may be evacuated by clean hands. After sopping up the pus with a cotton ball, clean the area with witch hazel.

Tea

Tea provides beneficial results in treating red and inflamed boils, as well as opening up pores and helping whiteheads to pop and drain, as per Dr. Laurie J. Polis in the book "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies."

For boils, soak a chamomile tea bag in cold water and rest it on your blemish for one minute. The tea's natural inflammatory properties will calm the redness. A similar process is involved for popping whiteheads. However, soak the chamomile tea bag in hot water, and apply it to your face for 30 seconds. The heat draws the whitehead to pop on its own, or you may coax it with clean hands.

Potatoes

Potatoes control acne inflammation and help to dry up whiteheads, according to Acnetalks.com. Peel and grate one potato. Crush the potato gratings into a pulp and apply the poultice on your face for 20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water.

The nutrients found in potatoes, such as vitamins "C and B-complex and minerals like potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc are good for the skin," according to OrganicFacts.com. Besides providing relief for blemishes, potatoes may be used to clean and soften the skin and to heal burns.
