If you suffer from mild acne or the occasional breakout, you may be able to experiment with a few home remedies. Common acne-fighting ingredients may be already in your kitchen cupboard or medicine cabinet. These remedies are not intended to replace any doctor-prescribed acne treatment regimens. Acne is a medical condition and should be evaluated by a physician.

Castor Oil

Applying oil to the skin seems counterproductive, but castor oil may just help. According to The Oil Cleansing Method website, castor oil has strong anti-inflammatory properties that help to heal and cleanse your skin. Using castor oil topically is particularly useful if you have oily skin, as it dries up excess oil. Dilute castor oil with another oil, such as sunflower seed oil, to prevent over-drying your skin. For oily skin, use a mixture of 30 percent castor oil with 70 percent sunflower seed oil. Use less castor oil and more sunflower seed oil for combination or dry skin, and experiment with the mixture according to your personal skin needs. While castor oil may effectively treat acne for some, there is not enough evidence to support its use as a replacement to conventional acne medications.


Zinc supplements may help clear your skin, particularly if you have acne that is red and inflamed. According to the Mayo Clinic, zinc aids in wound healing and reduces inflammation. If you take a multivitamin, it may already contain some zinc. If not, a zinc supplement of 50 mg may be sufficient to aid in healing and reducing the inflammation associated with acne. Additionally, some skin creams contain zinc to reduce acne breakouts. Zinc supplements may cause a bad taste in the mouth or nausea. Taking it with food can reduce these effects. Speak to your physician before adding any supplements to your daily routine to avoid possible adverse effects or drug interactions.

Apple Cider Vinegar

According to Home Remedies Web, apple cider vinegar fights the bacteria that leads to inflammatory acne and balancing the pH level of the skin. It also absorbs excess oil from the skin, which reduces clogged pores. Always dilute apple cider vinegar in water before applying it to your skin. A good mixture is 3 to 4 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Apply this solution to the skin and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing. While apple cider vinegar is widely recognized for its health benefits, it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of acne.
