According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 50 million Americans suffer from acne, including roughly 85 percent of the teenage population. In contrast to popular belief, indulgence in chocolate and french fries has little to do with sudden acne outbreaks, although diet in general does play a role in promoting long-term skin health. There is no overnight cure, either. However, there are home remedies and simple treatment measures to help fight acute acne.

Proper Cleansing

People often make the mistake of thinking that scrubbing the skin will help to get rid of acne, but this is only going to further irritate your skin. Likewise, washing your face with harsh soap will only strip your skin of its natural oils. In fact, very dry skin can actually trigger an acute case of acne more than excess oil. Washing with a gentle, nonabrasive cleanser and rinsing in warm water will help to remove acne-causing bacteria and excess oil without contributing to your already inflamed skin.

Rinsing your face with a solution containing equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar is an old-fashioned home remedy for pimples. The vinegar helps to restore the proper pH to the acid mantle of your top layer of skin, which should be between 4.5 and 5.5. This is the pH range necessary to enable your skin to naturally combat surface bacteria.

Neem

Neem is an evergreen tree in the mahogany family and an ingredient found in many soaps and lotions formulated for troubled skin. According to the Physicians’ Desk Reference for Herbal Medicines, the effectiveness of neem is due to the presence of limonoids, which are antibacterial compounds also found in many fruits. You can find neem preparations in most natural health food stores. Note that the label may include a phytochemical called azadirachtin in the list of ingredients, which is a specific type of limonoid.

Chinese scientists have determined that a newly discovered compound in neem called tetrahydrofuranyl diester 1 is also effective in checking a variety of bacteria. In a paper published in the March 2010 issue of Fitoterapia, the research team reported that this substance acted against Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria that lives on human skin that can produce skin infections, such as acne pimples.

Guggul

Guggul is a resin obtained from the mukul myrrh tree. According to a paper published in the Journal of Dermatology, guggulsterones, the active compounds in this botanical, was more effective in reducing blemishes than tetracycline therapy. In addition, the guggul-treated group reported fewer relapses than the tetracycline-treated group in a three-month follow-up.

However, the University of Maryland Medical Center warns that guggul may exert estrogenic effects. This means that you should not use this herb if you are pregnant or nursing, taking oral contraceptives or undergoing treatment for a hornone-related disease, such as prostate or breast cancer. Guggul may also interfere with certain medications, including anticoagulants.
