Acne affects as many as 45 million people in the United States, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, which makes it the most prevalent skin condition in the country. Numerous prescription and over-the-counter medicines are available for treating acne, but you can typically treat mild cases with home beauty remedies. You may have to use alternative treatments regularly for six to eight weeks before achieving results, however. In cases of moderate to severe acne, always consult a dermatologist before using home remedies.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, a common home beauty remedy for acne, may help reduce bacteria and inflammation and improve symptoms. A study published in 2007 in the "Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology" found that patients treated with a topical 5 percent tea tree oil gel experienced a reduced number of acne lesions over a treatment period of 45 days compared to placebo. Researchers concluded that tea tree oil works as an effective treatment for mild to moderate acne. Use tea tree oil at home by diluting one part oil in nine parts water, and applying the mixture directly to the affected areas once or twice daily. Apply just after washing your face for the best results.

Honey and Spice

An old folk remedy for acne suggested by the Reader's Digest Association in the book "1,801 Home Remedies: Trustworthy Treatments for Everyday Health Problems" consists of applying a mixture of honey and spice to acne lesions. Combine 1 tsp. each powdered nutmeg and pure honey, and spread a thin layer over the affected area. Allow the honey mixture to remain on the skin for at least 20 minutes and rinse with warm water. This home remedy may work because honey has antibacterial properties, but it will most likely take several weeks of daily treatment to see results.

Thyme Tea

Thyme, a strong natural astringent, may help clear out pores and reduce symptoms of acne. In her book "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies," Jude C. Todd recommends making a strong batch of thyme tea for use as a daily facial rinse if you're prone to acne. Pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over 4 tbsp. dried thyme in a heat-proof container. Cover and allow the mixture to stand for about 30 minutes. Strain and bottle the resulting liquid, and store in the refrigerator when not in use. Splash on your face once or twice a day after washing with a gentle cleanser. Follow with a light moisturizer to avoid excessive dryness.

Facial Steam

An aromatherapy facial steam may help open blocked pores and reduce inflammation caused by acne, according to Janet Zand in her book "Smart Medicine for Healthier Living." For the best results, use the treatment once or twice a week until you see results. Wash your face thoroughly before beginning. Bring 4 cups water to a rolling boil and transfer to a heat-proof bowl or pan. Add eight to 10 drops essential oil; stir to combine. Drape a towel over your head to catch the steam, and position your face about 6 inches above the water. Allow the steam to penetrate your skin for at least 10 minutes. Splash your face with cold water or an astringent to close the pores. Use an essential oil that benefits oily or acne-prone skin, such as frankincense, tea tree, myrrh or lavender.
