Home Acne Remedies

According to the Mayo Clinic, acne is generally caused by overproduction by the oil glands, bacteria buildup and irregular shedding of the skin cells. Hormonal changes are the most common factor in determining who gets acne, and it is often prevalent in people during adolescence, menopause and pregnancy for that reason. However, there are some natural home remedies that can help to clear up acne. These remedies have not been approved by the FDA for effectiveness, so you should consult your doctor before trying them.

Mint and Oatmeal Face Mask

According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care," a paste of fresh mint and oatmeal is often used on the skin to reduce the appearance of acne while helping to fight bacteria. To use a mint and oatmeal mask on the skin, mix three tablespoons freshly chopped mint with four tablespoons prepared oatmeal in a small bowl. Gently heat the mixture in the microwave or on the stove until it is warm. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water in the shower or bathtub to thoroughly remove the face mask. Apply your regular moisturizer, if you use one. Mint and oatmeal face mask can be used daily as long as it does not irritate your skin or increase redness.

Lemon Juice and Powdered Whey

According to Jethro Kloss, author of "Back to Eden: Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Food and Home Remedies Since 1939," a mixture of freshly squeezed or natural lemon juice and whey powder is a common home remedy to help get rid of acne. To use lemon juice and powdered whey on the skin, mix four tablespoons lemon juice with two tablespoons whey powder in a small bowl. Gently scrub your skin with the mixture for approximately 60 seconds before rinsing your skin with cool water. Gently pat the face dry and use your regular moisturizer. Lemon juice and powdered whey can be used daily as long as it does not irritate your skin further. Extra portions of the mixture can be stored in a container with a tight-fitting lid for two to three days.

Aloe Vera and Tea Tree Oil

A mixture of aloe vera gel and tea tree oil is a common folk remedy to help reduce the appearance of acne and acne scars while helping to fight the problem. To use aloe vera gel and tea tree oil on the skin, make a mixture that is one part natural aloe vera gel froma fresh leaf and one part tea tree oil. Apply the mixture in a thick layer to the face and leave it on for two to three hours or until dry. Gently rinse the face with cool water and pat dry. Make sure you use all-natural aloe vera gel, as aloe vera with added ingredients may irritate the symptoms of acne. This treatment can be used up to two times per day as needed as long as no irritation occurs.
