Tapeworms are parasites that predominantly remain in the intestines, but in some rare instances can migrate into other parts of the body. Tapeworm is most commonly obtained by being in contact with feces. Signs of a tapeworm are the desire to eat large amounts of food, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, gas, weakness and abdominal pain. Anecdotal evidence suggests that holistic treatments may act to destroy tapeworm. Consult with a health practitioner experienced in the treatment of parasites.

Nutritional Treatments

Certain foods have been used traditionally to treat intestinal parasites, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Garlic, pumpkin seeds and pomegranates contain natural compounds that are poisonous to the parasites. These items can be eaten separately or added to foods and smoothies. UMMC adds that there is evidence that a mixture of papaya seeds and honey shows promise for killing tapeworm.

Homeopathic Remedies

The University of Maryland Medical Center goes on to say that certain homeopathic remedies may be used for destroying tapeworm. They suggest choosing from Cuprum oxidatum nigrum, Indigo, Teucrium, Spigellia, Podophyllum, Cina, Sabadilla and Stanum. Because infestations of parasites can be life-threatening, a homeopathic practitioner should be consulted to prescribe the correct remedy, rather than attempting to use self-treatment for tapeworm and other intestinal parasites.

Herbs

A variety of herbs containing natural anti-microbial compounds such as propolis, garlic and berberine may be helpful in treating intestinal parasites, according to the University of Michigan Health System. Barbary, goldenseal, golden grape and Oregon grape, anise, black walnut and wormwood are a few of the herbs that have been used traditionally to destroy tapeworm.

Herbal remedies may not be as efficacious as conventional medicines for killing tapeworm, so herbs and other supplements like propolis should not be used without the supervision of a health practitioner. If the infestation remains after treatment with natural substances, consult a doctor for further guidance.

Water

Drinking water is important to keep the body hydrated and to flush the dead parasites from the system, regardless of what method is used. The recommended amount of water is generally eight to 10 glasses daily, or 1/2 oz. water per pound of body weight.
