Chronic pain affects every aspect of your body and life---you feel physically unable to do many of the things you want to do, and you just don't have the energy or motivation to complete them either. Because chronic pain affects so much of your physical and emotional self, it only makes sense that an effective treatment plan would also involve treating your whole self. A holistic treatment plan for chronic pain addresses both the physical symptoms of chronic pain and the effects it has across your mind and body.

Alternative and Physical Therapy

Though medication is one option, there are many therapies that can help to alleviate chronic pain. Acupuncture, biofeedback (which teaches how to control the body's response to pain) and relaxation techniques can all help to treat chronic pain, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Physical therapy can help alleviate chronic pain. You can teach your body to naturally relax and manage pain via behavioral therapy, which can include yoga and meditating, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) says.

Mind-Body Therapy and Lifestyle Changes

If chronic pain is affecting your emotional and physical health, you may want to consider addressing both with therapies that address physical and emotional pain. A holistic approach to treating chronic pain addresses the mind and body together, not separately, Holistic Health Solutions says. It's important to make significant lifestyle changes to help manage chronic pain---that means getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, getting an appropriate amount of sleep and avoiding bad habits, the AAFP recommends. Get plenty of sleep every night, but be sure to skip naps to avoid feeling overly fatigued---or not being tired enough to sleep at night. The AAFP also says it's important to avoid alcohol and cigarette smoking for better overall health and well-being.

Counseling and Relaxation Techniques

Chronic pain can lead to emotional distress, frustration, anxiety and even depression---so don't neglect your emotional health in treating chronic pain holistically. Working with a counselor or therapist can help you work through the emotional challenges that result from chronic pain, the National Pain Foundation notes. Many physical treatments---such as yoga and relaxation techniques---can also keep you emotionally healthy and ready to manage your chronic pain. Try some deep breathing techniques or visual imagery to bring a feeling of peace and relaxation, improving mood and reducing physical pain, the NPF recommends.
