Holistic Treatment for Candida
Yeast infections occur when there is an overgrowth of candida albicans in the body. This is known as candidiasis. C. Albicans becomes prevalent when good strains of bacteria in the body become weak or diminished. Yeast infections can be found in the digestive tract, the vaginal area and almost anywhere on the skin. Susceptible areas include under the arms, on the breasts and in the creases of joints.
Practice good hygiene. Showering regularly, brushing your teeth, and washing your hands are ways of keeping bacteria in check. Hand sanitizing lotions are available when soap and water are unavailable. Limiting the opportunities for bacterial growth on the outside of the body will help reduce the chances of bacteria being able to thrive on the inside.
Add an acidophilus supplement to your diet. You can also get lactobacillus acidophilus by eating yogurt. Bifidus probiotic supplements are also available. These help to coat the digestive tract with a protective lining. They also restore the body's pH balance by establishing the proper ratio of good bacteria to bad bacteria in the intestines and other parts of the body.
Avoid processed sugars and other types of sweeteners, including honey, beet sugar and fructose. Bacteria and yeast thrive in sugary environments. Eliminate them completely until the infection is gone. You can reintroduce them in small to moderate amounts, but watch for reoccurrence of any signs of the infection.
Avoid antibiotics, birth control pills and steroids, if at all possible. Antibiotics kill off both good and bad bacteria and can cause severe diarrhea. If you have to take antibiotics, add yogurt or acidophilus to your diet to counteract the intestinal issues. Birth control pills and steroids can cause hormone fluctuations that will alter the body's pH levels.
Add caprylic acid to your diet to prevent and fight yeast infections. It is a fatty acid found in butter fat, coconut oil and various other animal products. It also has anti-fungal properties. Caprylic acid absorbs easily into the digestive tract and helps to maintain balanced pH levels in the body. There are supplements on the market if you feel that you can't get adequate amounts in your diet. The average dosage is 300 to 1,200 mg daily, depending on the individual.
Use lavender essential oil to soothe and eliminate yeast infections that occur on the skin. Lavender oil can be placed on a cotton ball and dabbed on the affected area or diluted with a carrier oil, such as jojoba or almond oil for more sensitive skin types.
