Be Gentle

As tempting as it may be to scratch or scrub skin that is suffering from acne, doing so will only further irritate the skin and cause the condition to spread further. Hot or cold water can also be abrasive. When washing acne affected areas use warm water and gently cleanse the skin with your fingertips. After washing, avoid popping or picking at blemishes. Allow the infected areas to heal naturally.

Use Supplements and Food

What you put into your body can be just as important as what you put on it. The National Library of Medicine lists zinc as a successful acne treatment when used both orally and topically. Vitamin A is also recommended as a holistic acne remedy. Eating foods high in vitamin A, such as carrots, may be beneficial. Consuming vitamin A supplements is also recommended, as long as not simultaneously taking vitamin A derivative prescriptions.
For acne spot treatments, applying honey can be a holistic way to kill the bacteria in the affected area. Apply a thin coat of honey on the blemishes, then rinse off with warm water after 15 minutes.

Change Sheets and Pillowcases

Your skin makes contact with your sheets and pillowcases for hours as you sleep. Taking regular showers, cleansing your face twice a day, and avoiding hand contact with your face will not stop acne or breakouts from popping up if you go to sleep in dirty sheets or on bacteria laden pillowcases.
Change pillowcases and keep your sheets clean to help prevent acne from developing as you sleep. Sheets should be changed at least once or twice a week, and pillowcases should be changed daily or every other day for best results. Use hot water when washing sheets and pillowcases to kill bacteria. Use a laundry detergent formulized for people with sensitive skin, since these don't have dyes or perfumes that can agitate skin.

Protect Your Skin from Sun Damage

In addition to aggravating acne problems, the sun is a natural element and exposure to sunlight can discolor and damage your skin. Sunscreens can help, but a more holistic approach is to stay out of the sun during the times of day when sunlight is at its most intense. If you must be outside during the peak sunlight hours, wear full-length clothing to cover and protect your skin. Sunglasses do not just protect your eyes from the sun; wearing them also provides protection for the soft, delicate skin around your eyes. Protecting your skin from irritation is an essential step in holistic acne treatment.
