Herbs to Prevent Acne

Acne is a common ailment occurring around the time of adolescence, usually caused by changing hormones in the body. The condition ranges from mild to severe, depending on lifestyle, genetics and hormone production. Herbal remedies can help to reduce problematic acne along with preventing future outbreaks. Remember to make sure you consult a physican before practicing any types of alternative medicine. Unregulated herbal remedies may pose some safety risks.

Lemon

Lemon, frequently valued for its Vitamin C levels and used to fight colds, is also an effective tool in the fight against acne. Because of its antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties, lemon makes a powerful cleansing agent and battles bacteria that can cause acne, according to the Natural Health Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine. Lemon juice can be applied directly to acne or mixed with water. The fruit's juice is also beneficial in reducing sunburn, ringworm and warts.

Chasteberry

Chasteberry comes from a small shrubby tree originating in Central Asia and the Mediterranean. The plant derives its name from a belief that the herb could promote chastity and reduce the sexual desire of monks in the Middle Ages. Today, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, the plant is used for a host of medical conditions, including menstrual problems, symptoms of menopause, some types of infertility and acne. Chasteberry has also become quite popular in recent years because of its effect on the female hormone system, according to the One Earth Herbal Sourcebook. Fruit from the chasteberry plant can be taken as liquid extracts or solid extracts prepared into capsules and tablets. Do not use chasteberry if you are pregnant.

Burdock

Burdock, most commonly used in detoxify the blood, is also a beneficial topical agent for skin conditions such as pimples. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the herb helps to clear skin of eczema, acne, and psoriasis. Burdock also has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, along with diuretic and hypoglycemic effects, according to the Natural Health Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine. However, the encyclopedia says Burdock is rarely used alone. Frequently, the herb is combined with other remedies such as dandelion, also an effective supplement for acne. Extracts of burdock root can be found in a variety of herbal preparations and homeopathic remedies.
