Hormonal imbalance in women can occur at any age during your reproductive years, but may become more extreme during menopause. According to Womens Health Zone, some of the symptoms of hormone imbalance include extreme fatigue, depression, allergies, hair loss, PMS, and facial hair growth. Additional symptoms may include acne, hot flashes, night sweats, light or heavy periods, and irregular menstrual cycles. Hormones can become imbalanced from a variety of causes including exposure to environmental pollutants and toxins, poor diet, stress, hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills, cosmetics, and excessive consumption of non-organic foods and animal products.

Reducing these causes and incorporating herbs into your health care regime may help balance your hormones, although there is insufficient evidence to support these claims. Herbal remedies should not be used solely to replace conventional medicine, therefore consult with your health care provider prior to taking herbs to balance your hormones.

According to Alternative Medicine Review, vitex agnus castus--also known as chaste tree or chasteberry--can help regulate your hormones and improve your estrogen to progesterone ratio. Herbalists use this herb to treat hormone-related acne, menstrual irregularities, breast tenderness, PMS symptoms, infertility and lactation issues. A German study published in the 1990 issue of Gynakologische Praxis found vitex an effective herbal remedy in the treatment of menstrual cycle irregularities due to hyperprolactinemia, corpus luteum insufficiency, secondary amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea.

Dong Quai

Dong quai is also known as angelica and is a popular herb for women. According to Herb Wisdom, this herb can help improve hormonal balance, thereby regulating menstrual cycles and reducing hot flashes and PMS symptoms. Dong quai has long historical use in China as a female reproductive system tonic. This herb may also help fight infections and reduce ulcers, which makes it an effective remedy for acne treatment.

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is also referred to as Cimicifuga racemosa. This herb has long historical use among Native Americans for menstrual cramps and menopause relief. Black cohosh may have estrogenic activity, which makes it a useful remedy for balancing female hormone levels. According to Herb Wisdom, this herb may be useful in the treatment of menopausal symptoms, PMS, and irregular menstrual cycles.

Red Clover

Red clover is an herb that is also known as Trifolium pratense. Like dong quai, this herb is also a popular herb for women. According to Herb Wisdom, this herb is one of the richest sources of natural isoflavones--plant chemicals that act like estrogens in your body. These isoflavones may help regulate your hormones and reduce unpleasant menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.
