Acne breakouts are rarely welcome, and most people are eager to make their blemishes disappear as quickly as possible. A combination of consistent skincare with a gentle cleanser and spot treatments for active breakouts works for many people, but herbal remedies may also be worth considering. Herbal therapies are a growing business in the United States, where Archives of Dermatology estimates $3.24 billion was spent on herbal therapies in 1997. If you're considering using herbal remedies to treat your acne, it's a good idea to check with your dermatologist or health care provider first.

Tea Tree Oil

A solution of five percent tea tree oil, an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the tea tree plant, can be just as effective for treating acne as a solution containing five percent benzoyl peroxide, but it may take longer to show its results, according to the Mayo Clinic. People who use tea tree oil are also less likely to experience the dryness, itching, burning and other skin irritation that can occur with use of benzoyl peroxide, according to Archives of Dermatology.

Burdock

Taken internally, a tincture made with burdock root is a traditional treatment for acne, according to the University of Michigan Health System's Healthwise Knowledgebase. Though scientific research hasn't confirmed its purported benefits, burdock is supposed to work as a cleansing agent. Burdock is often combined with other herbs like yellow dock or red clover when prepared for acne treatments. More research is needed to show the benefits of burdock root for treating acne.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel contains tannins, which give it a natural astringency that is beneficial in treating acne, according to the Archives of Dermatology. White oak and English walnut have astringent properties similar to witch hazel. It is best to avoid commercial witch hazel preparations because the distillation process destroys many of the tannins that give the herb its astringency.
