Nodular or cystic acne is known to produce large painful lesions that can be disfiguring if disrupted. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not endorse the use of herbs or supplements to treat acne; however, some people may benefit from their use. Herbal treatments for nodular acne are a form of alternative medicine meant to complement, not replace, a physician's advice.

Tea Tree Oil

Acne is the result of clogged pores, whereas cystic acne involves infecting the surrounding skin tissues as well. Daily use of an astringent, such as the herb tea tree oil, may help to fight topical bacteria and blemishes. Tea tree oil is a natural antibacterial agent. A few drops of the essential oil, mixed with aloe vera gel or water, are applied directly to the skin with a clean cotton pad for some acne regimens.

Aloe Vera

The clear, sticky gel of the aloe barbadenis plant has skin healing and analgesic properties, according to author Mercy Popoola, R.N. Pure aloe gel, not artificial aloe cream, is applied directly to the skin and acne lesions to decrease redness, inflammation and discomfort from the nodules. The best source of aloe gel is from an aloe plant, available in the produce section of many grocery stores. Peel the skin from the thick green leaves to uncover the aloe gel inside.

Echinacea

Part of the daisy family, echinacea is sometimes used to boost the immune system and help fight colds. Although this herb is sometimes used for wound healing, it has a propensity to stimulate allergies, according to Popoola. Echinacea is available in teas, juices and pills as an over-the-counter herbal supplement. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine addresses the fact that this herb may be used specifically to treat acne through its immune-modulating properties; however, more research is needed.
