According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), acne affects between 17 to 45 million people. Acne can cause the breakout of pimples which can be very unsightly at times. This can affect a person's self-esteem and cause problems with socializing. There are many medications and over-the-counter treatments that offer relief from the skin condition. However, there are also some herbal treatments that may work without exposing a person to strong chemicals.

Guggul is derived from the mukul myrrh tree, which is a small thorny plant that grows throughout India. Guggul is a yellowish resin that is produced in the stem of the plant. According to the UMMC, guggul has been found to have the same benefits of using tetracycline (anti-bacterial medication) for acne treatment. Guggul helps to reduce the bacteria levels on the skin, ultimately reducing acne and any infection that might be beginning. Taking about 500 mg of guggul two times a day can help with the treatment of acne.

Burdock is an herb that has been used for many centuries to treat a wide variety of ailments. It is a root that is native to Asia and Europe but can now be readily found in the United States. It has a very sweet taste with a sticky or gummy texture. It contains some anti inflammatory and anti bacterial benefits which can help to heal acne by killing the bacteria that grows on the skin and by reducing inflammation and irritation that is caused by the acne. Burdock capsules are available for purchase in a vitamin or health food shop. Taking about 1 to 2 g of burdock three times a day may be enough to help with treating acne.

Red Clover

Red clover is known to many farmers as a plant they use to feed farm animals. However, it also has some medicinal benefits for humans. It has some anti-bacterial properties that make it excellent for healing infections. As a result, it has been found to be very useful with treating acne outbreaks. According to the UMMC, red clover can be purchased in ointments that can then be spread on the skin where the acne is occurring.
