Acne, an inflammatory skin condition, occurs when the pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells and in some cases, bacteria. More than 17 million people in the United States have acne, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, making it the most common skin disorder in the country. Numerous prescription and over-the-counter medications exist for the treatment of acne, but if you are looking for natural remedies, you also have several options.

Tea Tree Oil

When used externally, tea tree oil may reduce the bacteria that causes acne, lessen inflammation and redness, and generally improve symptoms. A study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology in 2007 found that a solution made of 5 percent tea tree oil proved more effective than placebo in treating mild to moderate cases of acne vulgaris. For the best results, dilute the oil in 9 parts water or aloe vera gel and apply directly to the affected area. Never apply full-strength tea tree oil to the skin, as it may cause irritation. Even diluted, skin irritation may occur in some individuals.

Guggul

Taking guggul (Commiphora mukul) orally may help combat acne. One study, published in the Journal of Dermatology found that patients taking guggul experienced better results than patients taking tetracycline, a popular antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. Researchers also noted that patients with oily skin responded remarkably better to the guggul treatment. Take about 500 milligrams of guggul per day, which equals about 25 milligrams guggulsterones, the herb's active ingredient.

Burdock

A traditional herbal remedy for acne, burdock has no scientific evidence to support its efficacy, but healers have used the herb for centuries to treat bacterial infections, boils, eczema and acne. In her book "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies," Jude Todd recommends making a burdock compress for acne. Place 1 cup dried burdock leaves in a medium-sized pan. Cover with 2 cups water, then bring to a quick boil. Lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat, soak a clean cloth in the liquid, wring out well and apply the hot compress directly to the affected area. Continue until the liquid cools, about 15 minutes. Repeat the treatment daily as needed.

Calendula

Another traditional herbal remedy for treating acne, calendula's anti-inflammatory properties may benefit sufferers of the condition by reducing redness and swelling, promoting rapid healing and preventing scar formation. In his book "Herbal Remedies," Asa Hershoff recommends using calendula tea as an antiseptic face wash, which he believes provides benefit even in long-standing, deep infections. Make calendula tea by steeping 2 tsp. dried calendula flowers in 1 cup boiling water. Strain, allow the mixture to cool, then use as a face wash once per day for the best results.

Other Herbs for Acne

Though no clinical evidence supports the use of these herbs, natural healers and herbalists often prescribe them for treating mild to severe cases of acne. Try cleavers, dandelion, figwort, red clover or yellow dock. Any of these herbs made into tea and applied as a hot compress or used as a face wash may relieve your acne symptoms, speed healing and prevent future outbreaks.
