Overview

Acne is a condition that affects the oil glands on the skin's surface. When an overproduction of oil occurs, the skin follicles become clogged and pimples form. Acne is most common on the face, but can also appear on other areas of the body. Mild to moderate acne can be treated at home. For severe acne, speak to your doctor about treatment options. He may recommend the use of a topical retinoid or an oral medication like Accutane.

Step 1

Clean skin twice a day with a mild face wash. Remove excess oil and dirt to help get rid of your acne breakouts. Use an alcohol-free cleanser that is free of fragrances. Recommended brands include Neutogena, Dove and Murad.

Step 2

Keep your hands off of your skin. If you are prone to breakouts, avoid touching your skin. If you have longer hair, keep it pulled back to avoid transferring oils from your hair to the face.

Step 3

Use an over-the-counter topical treatment product. An acne medication that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help clear up excess oil and peel away the skin to promote new growth. The treatments can be purchased as a gel, lotion, ointment or pad. Apply twice daily until the skin clears up. If the skin feels extremely dry, reduce applications to once a day. Makers of acne topical treatments include Oxy and Clearasil.

Step 4

Wear sunblock and limit sun exposure. While using acne medications, your skin is likely to be sensitive to the sun. When you are outdoors, slather on sunblock with a SPF of 15 or higher.

Step 5

Choose noncomedogenic makeup. Check makeup labels and make sure that the products are noncomedogenic. This means that the ingredients in the product will not clog the pores.
