Health Tips for Skin Care

When you take care of your skin, you can lessen the risk of suffering from blemishes such as blackheads, age spots, pimples and zits. Good skin care practices can also delay the signs of premature aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. Keep in mind that these problems can still occur even with good skin care. You can treat problem skin with over-the-counter acne products or procedures offered by a cosmetic dermatologist.

Sunscreen

Sun exposure not only ages the skin but can lead to serious health conditions, such as skin cancer. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 while outdoors. Reapply every two hours to keep the skin well protected. Try to avoid the sun when the rays are the most powerful, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Use protective clothing such as sunglasses, wide-brim hats, longsleeved shirts and long pants to keep your skin shielded from the sun.

Daily Washing

Wash your skin daily: once in the morning and once in the night. Washing the skin too often can dry out the skin. Apply a mild face wash with no added fragrance labeled non-comedogenic. To be labeled non-comedogenic, the product had to go through testing and be found to not clog the pores. When you wash the skin twice a day, you can prevent breakouts by removing excess oil and dirt. Use lukewarm water during cleansing and pat the skin dry. Limit the amount of time you spend bathing, since long showers and baths can strip the skin of moisture.

Avoid Smoking

If you want to avoid premature aging, do not smoke. Smoking thins out the skin and depletes it of vital nutrients such as vitamin A. Since smoking can damage collagen and elastin, you can develop wrinkles early on. Blood flow is decreased to the skin because smoking narrows the blood vessels. The eyes and mouth are most prone to wrinkles due to the repetitive facial expressions made while smoking.

Diet

The skin requires certain nutrients to retain its health. Eating a well-rounded diet can help keep it youthful and supple. Your diet should include plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean proteins. Eating foods rich in vitamin C can keep your skin healthy, according to MayoClinic.com. Some foods high in vitamin C include grapefruit, tomatoes, oranges and green leafy vegetables. Limit the amount of fat in your diet by avoiding fast food, fried meals, fatty cuts of meat, full-fat dairy products and sweets.
