According to the Mayo Clinic, there are three main causes of pimples and acne: excess body oil, irritated hair follicles from irregular shedding of dead skin and bacteria buildup. It's important to know that no treatment will provide instant results, and no one treatment is best for everyone. The severity of your acne and your body's ability to heal will determine which treatment is best for you.

Wash Acne Area

Wash your skin no more than twice a day with a mild cleanser using only your fingertips to apply the cleanser. Over-washing will not cure your acne. In fact, it can irritate your pores further only to become clogged and form more acne. Do not use astringents, scrubbers or masks as these too can further irritate your skin, according to AcneNet, the website of the American Academy of Dermatology. You also want to be sure to wash after excessive sweating.

Over-the-Counter Treatments

Over-the-counter treatments can be successful in treating mild to moderate acne. Treatments can come in the form of creams or other topical applications. Benzoyl peroxide, sulfur and salicylic acid are the primary ingredients used to dry excessive oil and kill bacteria, according to AcneNet. Side effects can include dry, irritated skin sometimes resulting in the top layer flaking or peeling.

Prescription Treatments

Prescription treatments come in topical applications similar to over-the-counter treatments, but are considerably stronger. As with over-the-counter treatments, prescription topical applications can cause dry, irritated skin sometimes resulting in redness, stinging, burning and peeling, according to the Mayo Clinic. Doctors can also prescribe oral antibiotics to help fight the bacteria and inflammation of the acne. Isotretinoin, otherwise known as Accutane, is a very strong prescribed medication for the most severe cases of acne. Though it is one of the most effective treatments, Accutane carries numerous severe side effects.

Emerging Treatments

According to the Mayo Clinic, newer forms of acne treatment include laser and light therapies and steroid injections. Laser and light therapies are able to get deep into the skin layers without harming the surface of the skin like other treatments. Side effects can include red, dry and inflamed skin. Steroid injections are used for severe types of acne such as cysts and nodules. Side effects can include thinning of the skin, appearance of small blood vessels or lightening of the skin tone.
