Good Facial Cleanser for Oily Skin
You wash your face every day, but it still feels greasy. The medical term for excessively oily skin is seborrhoea, and this condition results when your sebaceous glands become overactive and produce more sebum than necessary. But rather than wash more frequently, which can strip your skin of moisture and actually cause it to produce more oil, use a cleanser twice a day that has been designed for those with oily skin.
Both men and women can experience oily skin. You may battle it all your life, or find it suddenly occurring when you enter your teens and your hormones change. Greasy skin often feels uncomfortable, looks shiny and can result in a buildup of sebum in your pores, which may lead to acne. If your skin looks shiny within an hour or two after you wash it, you have oily skin. While this is not typically the sign of a more serious medical condition, talk to your doctor if you notice any sudden changes in the amount of oil your skin produces.
Cleanser for oily skin should be gentle and nonabrasive, and it should also state that it is noncomedogenic so it will not clog your pores. Do not use a cleanser with detergents, soaps or alcohol, as these can dry out your complexion too much and send your sebaceous glands into overdrive. If your skin is also acne-prone or you experience blackheads and clogged pores, choose a foaming cleanser that is medicated with salicylic acid. This treatment will get rid of dead skin cells and help keep your pores clear of dirt and debris. If you find that the medication irritates your skin, use it every other day.
Wash your face once in the morning, once before bed and once during the day if you sweat heavily. Wet your face and hands with lukewarm water, and squeeze the cleanser you choose into your palms. Work it into a lather, and smooth it over your face using your fingertips. Massage the areas where your skin produces the most oil, and then rinse the product off and pat dry.
If you use cosmetics, look for ones that are also noncomedogenic. Dermatologist Amy Wechsler recommends using mineral makeup, which will not clog your pores and tends to stay on better on greasy complexions.
Scrubbing your oily skin with a harsh exfoliant or washing it more than three times a day can cause more harm than good. It can not only dry out your complexion, but may also increase the amount of bacteria on your skin's surface. This can lead to blemishes and put you at risk for an infection.
