Gentle Natural Acne Treatment
Delicate facial skin may respond to pharmaceutical acne preparations with inflammation and excessive dryness that can lead to an increase in breakouts, scarring and discomfort. Treating acne at home with simple ingredients allows you to use effective natural ingredients without causing irritation to the skin. Always consult with your health care provider before using any alternative preparations on your skin.
Create a gentle exfoliate scrub to remove dead skin and impurities with kitchen ingredients. Finely ground oatmeal can be combined with honey and rosewater to make a smooth paste. Apply to facial skin using a circular motion over intact skin and patting gently over any areas of active acne. Be sure to avoid the delicate skin around the eyes. Rinse well with lukewarm water and pat dry. Do not use oatmeal if you are gluten sensitive, as oatmeal contains a substance similar to wheat gluten.
Puree one-half an avocado, five cubes of mango, one strawberry and 1 teaspoon plain yogurt to make an enzymatic facial mask designed to hydrate irritated skin. Apply the mask to freshly washed skin and allow to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Always avoid mucous membranes when using any type of facial mask.
Allowing the pores to release oil, dirt and old skin promotes proper follicle function. When your follicles function better you may have less frequent breakouts. To simulate the luxury of a spa facial treatment fill a basin with boiling water, add two drops rosemary essential oil and drape a towel over your head as you place it over the basin to allow the steam to penetrate the dermal layer of skin. As the steam carries the antimicrobial vapors of rosemary essential oil into the pores it will loosen stubborn clogs in the skin. Allow yourself to take in this gentle-cleaning steam for 10 minutes. Always use caution around boiling water to prevent burns. Do not use rosemary essential oil if you are allergic to pines.
Balancing Skin Oil
Keeping your skin clean is only one part of treating acne conditions. According to author Rosemary Gladstar, replacing the oil lost through washing is essential for balanced skin. Press four drops calendula-infused extra virgin olive oil into freshly cleansed skin twice a day for even tone as well as a reduction in blemishes. Do not use calendula if you are allergic to pollen.
The antibacterial elements found in lavender essential oil are perfect for combating acne without causing excessive drying. Simply apply a drop of lavender essential oil directly to acne to reduce inflammation and prevent further breakouts with a daily mist of lavender-infused distilled water.
Keep essential oils away from pets and children to avoid accidental ingestion. Consult a physician about any severe skin conditions. Discontinue any alternative treatment if an adverse reaction occurs. Herbal remedies are not meant to take the place of conventional therapies.
