Blackheads are a skin condition associated with acne in which the pore clogs from excess oil production. Normally, the sebaceous glands ensure the proper lubrication of skin to aid in the removal of accumulated dead cells. The Acne Resource Organization states that diet may play a role in the development of acne and blackheads. In fact, chemicals released during the breakdown of certain foods distinctly cause breakouts. Eating a variety of skin-friendly fruits and vegetables can reduce the appearance of blackheads and unsightly blemishes.


Avocados have high levels of vitamin E, which is beneficial to the skin. As an antioxidant, this vitamin prevents free-radical damage that can deteriorate skin cells and aggravate acne. The Acne Resource Center says that vitamin E regulates the levels of retinol present in the body, which is essential for healthy skin and the prevention of blackheads. Although avocados contain fat, it is considered "good fat" like mono and polyunsaturated fats. Even so, eat no more than 1/4 an avocado a day as part of a healthy diet.

Sweet Potatoes

Women's Health UK reports that refined carbohydrates increase the emergence of acne and blackheads. White bread, for example, contains processed carbohydrates that create high levels of insulin in the body, resulting in excess oil and blackheads. Sweet potatoes contain simple carbohydrates that are slowly broken down by the body, maintaining insulin levels while delivering vital nutrients and vitamins, such as vitamin C, A and E.


Vitamin C found in oranges promotes the healing of skin associated with acne and blackheads. The American Chronicle says that vitamin C promotes the production of collagen and elastin and balances skin tone. Additionally, vitamin C strengthens the immune system, which in turn helps to ward off bacteria propagated by skin blemishes.

Chard, Kale, Turnip Greens

Green leafy vegetables, such as chard, kale and turnip greens, are crucial in detoxifying the body and clearing the skin. Accumulated toxins not excreted via the digestive tract are instead released through the skin. The Young Women's Health Organization states that dark green leafy vegetables are efficient sources of fibers and vitamins A, C and K. Facilitating proper digestion by eating vegetables high in fiber and vitamins reduces toxins from the skin.


Strawberries contain alpha hydroxyl acid, which assists the kidneys in cleansing the body and clearing the skin of acne and blackheads. The FDA says that alpha hydroxyl improves skin texture and tone while unblocking and cleansing pores.
